What is CBT?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
CBT is a type of Psychological Treatment that helps one change the way they think, feel and behave.

It is based on the principle that one’s thoughts and ideas impact, either negatively or positively, on the way people feel and behave.

It is a collaborative process between the Therapist and the Client, to bring about positive change.

It is an interactive process that involves undertaking homework tasks between sessions which may include for example, carrying out activities such as monitoring thoughts and feelings throughout the week and entering these into a thought diary and facing fears through exposure to things they are avoiding.

The ABC diagram opposite illustrates how A (The Autonomic Nervous System consisting of both Emotions and Symptoms) affects both the B (Behaviour) and C (Thoughts) of the individual. For example, people
who are anxious, often suffer from panic attacks and begin to avoid the feared situation, thinking that something bad will happen to them "If I do this I will die".

CBT addresses this by empowering the client with healthier coping strategies and healthy LifeStyle changes (B), by learning to challenge their negative thought processes (C), and by considering medication therapy or alternative remedies (A)
